Staring is Believing: Visualization and Computers in Art, Architecture, and Genetics. A panel discussion organized by Haseeb Ahmed in the framework of the Fish Bone Chapel projectl- a commissioned project by the Netherlands Genomics Initiative after winning the Designers and Artists for Genomics Award.

This talk is about the role that visualization has come to play in advanced research in genetics and architecture and how artists form a critical reaction to this. We are inundated with huge amounts of data. While we continue to develop means to generate more comprehensive data with computational methods, often scientists, architects, and artists fall back on our most familiar senses to make real these new forms. Vision is reaffirmed as the primary means of understanding the world or "Seeing is Believing" Panelists: Dr. Nimish Bilioria of the Hyperbody Studio at Technical University Delft, Dr. Jos Klienjans Director of the Netherlands Toxico-Genomics Center at the University of Maastricht, and artist Adrien Lucca.

Lahore Letters
Text based artworks and performance from Lahore Pakistan.

In the framework of "Has the World Already Been Made? x 4+1" Haseeb Ahmed has invited the collective Chalo Chalo Lahore Chalo from Lahore, Pakistan to present a set of text based pieces as well as real time internet performances. The group collective is engaged with trying to map a new 'psychogeography' of the ancient and dense city. These works speak to the immediacy and mediation between people but also between vast geographic distances.

Also included in the installation is a version of the artwork 'Miniature World' which Haseeb Ahmed produced for the Lahore Literary Festival earlier this year with the collective. Curator Nav Haq of MUKHA, Antwerp has contributed an forthcoming essay reflecting on Pakistan, art, and education. Artists included are Fazal Rizvi, Rabya Naseer, and Saira Ansari.

This show deals with the appropriations of traditional Islamic architecture. For this show I will install the works Skeletal Mosque and Inverted Kaaba. the Skeletal Mosque consists of a fragmented Muqarnas dome that is either under construction or destruction. Muqarnas are the only original invention of Islamic architecture- a 3D tiling system in which each block functions as a key-stone.

The Inverted Kaaba is the absence of a black cube. The black cube in a gallery is both the Malevich's Black Square as well as a representation of the Kaaba- the empty black cube towards which billions of Muslims pray towards. It is the duality of absolute negativity and embodiment at once. This is the ambivalent edge between form and identity that I am interested in.
